I prefer forests and mountains over the sea and long stretches of sandy beaches. It’s always been that way. But there is an exception, and that is Whitby beach in North Yorkshire. It has a special hold over me, and I think one of the reasons is because it is so god damn dramatic! It’s easy to see why Bram Stoker was inspired by this stretch of coast. He chose Whitby beach as the location where the doomed Demeter would run ashore, carrying its bloody thirsty cargo. The beach is home to enormous boulders and beautiful cliffs, teaming with fossils and jet. If you look landwards you have the North Yorkshire Moors. If you turn in the opposite direction, you have the wild and unforgiving North sea. This beautiful place, heavy with mystery is where I decided to capture some self-portraits.
