DIY: Quick 3-Ingredient Soap

Last winter I attended a workshop on how to make quick and easy DIY gifts using herbs from your kitchen garden. Among other things I learned how to make soap, using no more than three ingredients. Since I was delighted by the results, I thought it’d be nice to share the instructions with you.

This is what you need:

  1. a bar of glycerin (you should be able to purchase/order this from any pharmacy)
  2. an essential oil of your choice
  3. some dried herbs of your choice (e. g. rosmary, lemon balm, mint … or also lavender, rose blossoms, etc.)

In addition, you’ll need a muffin cup and a stick of sorts for stirring.

For the sample soaps that you can see in the pictures I used dried lemon balm and jasmine-scented essential oil, as well as lavender blossoms and opium-scented essential oil.

Ok, so here’s how to proceed:

  • cut little pieces from your bar of glycerin and melt everything in your microwave for about one minute (if you don’t have a microwave, melt the glycerin in a waterbath instead)
  • pour the liquefied glycerin into the muffin cup (I used a reusable silicone cup, but you may use paper cups just as well – these make a nice gift wrapper!)
  • quickly add the herbs and about 10 drops of essential oil. Stir until the ingredients are well mixed.
  • let the soap set for about an hour – and you’re done!

You may mix & match different herbs and essential oils as you like! Just give it a try – making this soap does not require much working time (less than five minutes, actually) and it is very inexpensive.

Having any questions? Feel free to ask, I’ll try to answer them.
